The Meaning of Handmade [ 29 July 2009 ]

This course will look at the changing nature of craft, and its intersections with contemporary art and design. This course will include a brief history of the contemporary craft movement, beginning with Arts and Crafts in the late nineteenth century, looking at the influence of figures such as Bernard Leach and David Pye, and considering the emergence of craft as a distinct art category after World War II. Subsequent lectures examine a variety of topics in contemporary craft practice, focusing particularly on the concept of the handmade and its relevance to the worlds of art and design in an age driven by technology.  Read full listing…
