The Theatre Royal, a Grade I listed building, is one of the most famous theatres in the country and in its 170 year history has played host to the biggest names in dance, drama, music and comedy.

In 2010/11 the Theatre Royal Newcastle ran a Campaign to find the North East's Favourite Shakespeare character. Almost 2000 votes were cast and the winner, announced on Shakespeare's birthday, 23 April, was Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet. Now the Theatre Royal, in association with Newcastle's Biscuit Factory Foundation, is seeking proposals from sculptors for a life-size bronze sculpture of Mercutio to stand in a public place within the Theatre Royal, a Grade1 listed late Regency building, one of the world's finest theatre houses.
