Beauty/Lines

31 July 2008

The Beauty Lines commission attracted 75 applications with practitioners from USA, Germany, Norway, Bulgaria, Italy, Scotland and the Highlands competing for the project. Shortlisting interviews were in July and three artist teams have been selected to prepare designs for the next part of the selection process.

Haque Design + Research led by Usman Haque work with new & emerging technologies; the company is establishing a growing international reputation for developing & delivering projects that have a strong interactive emphasis. 'Burble' is an immense wall of balloons constructed by the public that can be transformed by mobile-texting, other works focus on smell or are performance-orientated and his approach to the Ramada Commission is likely to involve an interactive element.

Alex Frost is represented by Sorcha Dallas Gallery in Glasgow. His work is often modular with repetition or patterned surfaces featuring strongly. In 'Maverick' he took the medium of mosaic to create a round sculpture based on a self-portrait. What materials or processes Frost chooses to focus on is yet to be confirmed although the mosaic sculptures illustrated on his website give perhaps the clearest steer on how his approach may develop.

Creative duo Hsiao-Chi Tsai & Kimiya Yoshikawa create organic dynamic sculptures. This young team is becoming known for a number of larger scale commissions in the UK and abroad that respond to the history of the site in some way. On a 10 day research trip in Inverness, the pair connected with local historian Hector Macdonald to immerse themselves in archives and photographic material about the hotel that dates back to the early 1800s.
