The facility is both a zoological institution caring for apprximately 1,000 animals as well as a botanical garden displaying hundreds of species of plants. The entire zoo encompasses approximately 100 acres of land and is open 363 days a year. The proposed site for the artwork is the north side of Memorial Drive, adjacent to Alberta Plaza, the newly renovated parking lot and main entrance. The artist's challenge is to create a unique artwork that reflects the mission of the Calgary Zoo: "to engage visitors in enjoyable and unique experiences, connect our community with nature, and inspire actions which support conservation."The Public Art Program encourages artists working in all media to apply. Public art is sought that will heighten the visitor experience, enhancing their visit to the zoo as a stimulating and enticing experience of discovery.
