Paul Stone on east London based organisation Cell Project Space that across three sites encompasses gallery, studios and internship programme.
Artists Milika Muritu and Richard Priestley founded Cell Project Space in 2000 to provide affordable studio workshop facilities for artists. The organisation took its name from the original function of its Tyssen Street premises a Victorian lunatic asylum. Sharing the building with a number of other users, the 12,000 sq ft of space occupied by Cell had originally been the padded cell wing. Set in one of Londons most deprived communities Hackney and Tower Hamlets Cell has become an independent addition to East Londons fast expanding visual arts scene. Since its foundation Cell has expanded both its physical space now occupying three buildings and the scope of its activities, employing a part-time studios manager, as well as creating a functional internship programme for the exhibition space and its educational programme. At present Cell is largely self-financed, with income from studio rents funding both expansion of the organisations workspace and its exhibition provision.
