Sackler report

Crafts Council supports renowned jeweller Dorothy Hogg MBE as first maker-in residence at the Sackler Centre for arts education at the V&A. The Crafts Council and the V&A have launched this Craft Residency as part of the V&A’'s new Museum Residency programme. The V&A’s programme, supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Esm'e Fairbairn Foundation, will give four artists and makers per year the opportunity to have a studio for six months in the Museum’s new Sackler Centre and access to the complete V&A and Crafts Council Collections.

Dorothy Hogg was selected by a panel of Crafts Council and V&A specialists for her dynamic and inspiring ideas about how she would use the residency opportunity. Ideas include creating a ‘chain of talent’; a giant charm bracelet that will be created throughout the V&A by the public at Designarama!, a weekend celebrating the new Sackler Centre, from 24-26 October. “I see something amazing every day in the eight miles of galleries at the V&A. Through the residency I have a very special opportunity to explore my own creativity and find resonances with objects in the collection. I am enjoying the chance to communicate my enthusiasm for this inspiring environment to the wider public.” Dorothy Hogg will be based at the Sackler Centre for three days a week and with her studio regularly open to the public.

The Craft Residency is aimed at experienced and established UK-based makers. The maker-in-residence will contribute to the V&A’s programme of education events and the Crafts Council's Maker Development programme for Emerging and Developing Makers. The residency also offers a unique opportunity for makers to take dedicated time to develop new work, re-assess their practice, or see work in different contexts. “The importance of supporting established makers to further their practice has been recognised by this new Craft Residency initiative at the V&A Sackler Centre. Dorothy is the perfect choice for this inaugural role as she is not only a world-class jeweler and silversmith but an experienced educator who has been an inspirational figure to many over the last 20 years.”
