As the first and only artist-led gallery and studio complex in South West London, Studio Voltaire offers a unique service previously unavailable for audiences, schools/community groups and artists. Through their exhibition, education and studio programmes, they aim to create access and participation in contemporary art practice and support artists projects, particularly those that may not be possible within conventional institutional frameworks. Studio Voltaire started very organically in 1994, when a small group of artists from the local area were frustrated with the lack of studio provision in South West London. In its first incarnation on Voltaire Road, Studio Voltaire was purely a studio complex. Over time, the organisation has grown both in size and its remit. In 1999, the organisation moved to its current location and became a registered charity. As well as increasing the amount of studio provision, the new space also enabled the organisation to have an exhibition space.
