The International 3 is an exhibition and project space based in Manchester that runs as a not-for-profit company. Last year it also acted as venue for the British Art Show 6, providing a solo space for the exhibition of Juneau Projects work. The International 3 opened in June 2000 as a project and office space for two existing and well established curatorial initiatives, The Annual Programme and Work and Leisure International. These organisations had complimentary interests in all forms of contemporary art: the professional development of artists and a commitment to encouraging and developing an art scene in Manchester. The International 3 gained recognition as a space in itself, and the two curatorial initiatives agreed to merge, phasing out The Annual Programme and Work and Leisure International as separate organisations and beginning to work jointly under the name The International 3. Having a wealth of collective experience in curating exhibitions and commissioning works by individual artists, they realised that to further increase the profile of Manchester and the artists living there they would also need to engage with the international art market.
