A rich and timely resource for all working in the
visual arts
Paul Stone talks to John Walter about his time at the British School at Rome.
The British School at Rome (BSR) is a centre for research on the archaeology, history, and culture of Italy, and for contemporary art and architecture. It serves the needs of scholars and fine artists from the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. The BSR is one of the research institutes sponsored by the British Academy, and is one of a large group of international academies in Rome.
There are a number of scholarships available at BSR. London-based artist, John Walter, is a recipient of the Sainsbury Scholarship. The scholarship is for twelve months with a possible renewal for a further nine months. Other scholarships last for varying amounts of time. Walter was at The BSR between 2006 and 2008:
I wanted to be in Italy long enough to learn some of the language, travel extensively and absorb the influences of the art and architecture steadily. I didnt want to have to rush to find sources and ram Italy down the neck of the work rather to let it seep in through osmosis by being here. Over time I have made important discoveries of frescos and popular imagery that I can use for a long time to come.
