Tim Birch profiles John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize in the build up to the twenty-fifth exhibition.
This is a milestone year for the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize. Begun in 1957 by Littlewoods founder Sir John Moores, himself a keen painter, 2008 marks its twenty-fifth anniversary. As a biennial, that makes fifty years. Over that time nearly 2,000 artists have exhibited as part of the John Moores, including David Hockney, Peter Doig and Richard Hamilton. Doig speaks for many when he says the John Moores was critical in his career.
The judges marking John Moores 25 form a suitably significant posse: artists Jake & Dinos Chapman, painters Graham Crowley and Paul Morrison (a former winner), art critic Sacha Craddock. Almost 100 people have sat on the judging panel over the years, including Jarvis Cocker, Germaine Greer, Sir Peter Blake and Tracey Emin.
