A rich and timely resource for all working in the
visual arts
Pamela Wells and Alicja Rogalska report back from Supermarket - an artist-run international art fair in Stockholm. They talk about why their own artist association Laundry attended the event, meet representatives from a vibrant artist-run culture in Sweden and beyond, and offer a sample of some of the organisations who attended.
The idea for Supermarket was born three years ago in the shape of Minimarket, which was a spontaneous counter-happening to the commercial art fair Market in Stockholm. Organised by local artist-run galleries in less than two weeks, the Minimarket event received plenty of media attention. The committee immediately broadened their horizons by securing funding and organising visits to artist-led initiatives in other countries, which led to the first Supermarket in 2007 with seventeen international organisations participating. In 2008 there were thirty-five exhibitors from Europe and North America who occupied a large industrial space. Testimony to the growing trend of artist-led initiatives, this year's Supermarket expanded to occupy the Clarion Hotel in Stockholm hosting fifty-four organisations from an ever-widening geography. Rather than a focus on selling artwork, the goal of Supermarket is to provide a showcase and to create networking opportunities.
