Matt Roberts
Curator Matt Roberts talks to Jane Watt about how and why he set up the London-based organisation Matt Roberts Arts and the importance of providing support and a platform for emerging and mid-career artists, curators and arts professionals.
Following his postgraduate studies in Fine Art at Staffordshire University Matt Roberts was elected chairman of The Conjunction Group, an artist-led organisation that seeks to initiate projects and support artists in Staffordshire. This role enabled him to travel to Birmingham, Nottingham, Bristol, Leeds, and Manchester to meet artists groups, curators, and museum professionals to learn about projects within their regions. It also allowed him to promote the work that the Conjunction Group was doing in Stoke-on-Trent to a wider, national audience. During this time Roberts supported the Conjunction Group in a networking and marketing role as they established the AirSpace Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent's first dedicated contemporary art space that opened in 2006.
