Phoenix Arts Association Ltd (Phoenix) is an artist-led organisation with charitable status which provides public access to the arts and arts education, and supplies affordable artists studios and programmes to aid development.
Phoenix offer artists a space where they can work and meet with their community in a dynamic and creative environment. The activities centre around a large, redundant office block in central Brighton which was purchased with aid from the Government's Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) via Brighton council and a bank loan brokered by the Charities Aid Foundation. We are now in the middle of the final phase of basic refurbishment, supported by grants from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts, the Esmée Fairbairn Trust and additional SRB money. We have also applied for capital funding under the Regional Arts Lottery Programme. The charity and premises are the result of a nine-year process of development. At the beginning there were sixteen artists or so looking for studios. We took short-term space ironically in the current premises and formed a loose collective. We had weekly meetings and worried about our security. Initially we showed mostly our own work in the roughish gallery space we carved out and supported with our rents.
