A rich and timely resource for all working in the
visual arts
Art has always had the ability for convergence and understanding amongst people, irrespective of language barriers. Internationalism in art is that space that transcends fixed geographies, identities and positions to create a new coherence from diverse dialogues. As an artist in Malta the need to transcend the physical confinements of a small island was strong. My interest in communication, the attitudes and artistic expression of people working within different cultures heightened my motivation to seek a wider audience. After exhibiting in other countries I looked towards an MA in the UK as a platform for further exchange. In 1998, I joined the MA in Fine Art at the Kent Institute of Art and Design (KIAD) in Canterbury. A proposal for a contemporary investigation of historic landmarks on Maltese archaeological sites involving travel for field research was well received by Richard Davies, the Course Director, who is now also heading the new Master in Fine Art (International Practice). As facilitation for overseas research on the taught MA had not yet been formally structured, many long-distance calls and patient negotiations followed.
