Working in the public realm is a complex endeavour, involving deep and involved participation with local communities as well as a strong artistic integrity. Figure Ground, a group of artists based in the South of England, have initiated a series of events discussing public practice with other artists in a format which is open, participatory and creative.

Katy Beinart, Jo Thomas and Jon Adams came together as former recipients of Art Plus awards from Arts Council England and current recipients of a NAN bursary.

Katy Beinart explains: "We will use outside spaces as starting points for conversations, creating physical interventions as means for debate to emerge, so the events themselves are artistic processes. We want to question the boundaries of practice in outside space, exploring where practice begins and ends. The events will take place around the South East region: Bracknell, Chatham, Brighton and Milton Keynes this autumn. An initial event took place on 31st July at Fabrica, Brighton, and acted as an introduction to the project and provided an opportunity for 16 artists based in Brighton and the surrounding area to get involved."
