Profile of the Artists’ Quarters at The Point, Eastleigh.

The Artists' Quarters scheme offers a unique opportunity for four graduate or early career artists or groups based in the south east region over one year, artists who think they would benefit from a period of structured support which would enable them to develop artistically and find a market for their work.

 Sharing a fully equipped office in The Point the quartered artists will be part of an established creative industries hub comprising The Point, Eastleigh Borough Council's creative learning team, Hampshire Dance and the commercial film production company Cass Productions. The scheme guarantees artistic mentorship, studio space and theatre production time,specialist training and advice, contact with the public and support from a creative producer.

In October 2009 4 artist-led initiatives became Associate Artists at The Point, Eastleigh as part of the innovative Artists Quarters Scheme:

SeedSew

Seedsew, formed in 2008 by performance artists, Natalie Adams and Benjamin Martin, is a small performance company who graduated from Winchester University. SeedSew's work crosses over disciplines drawing on dance theatre, art, visual art, sound and improvisation. They are currently undertaking a small tour of unusual places and spaces looking at how the documentation of this can be incorporated into their performance work. They have recently completed an installation in Atrium at The Point combing drawing, painting, film and audience interaction. They are looking for residency opportunities in Berlin to further their interest in film and performance.

Udify

Udifydance is a contemporary dance company co-founded by Chichester graduates, Chay Burrows and Christopher Reynolds. Their style is a collection of exciting floor work infused with the creation of a dynamic vocabulary.  Udify's educational work is now developing and growing with commissioned works on youth company's such as Accelerate, I:Dance, Newbury Contemporary and Totton College Company amongst others. They are awaiting an GFA proposal to tour their triple bill of works in Autumn 2010. One of these works is a commission from Hampshire Dance which will involve them working with a 'young' choreographer.

Lost Banditos

Lost Banditos are a young physical theatre company who have trained together for the past three years at St. Mary's in Twickenham, developing and experimenting with performance in the form of clown, bouffon, storytelling and improvisation. Their work concentrates on finding a current story or topic that they can experiment, re-work and play with. They work through the medium of humour and subversion to tell poignant tales.  They are working with director, Kasia Zaremba-Byrne and in the process of gathering together a collective of musicians and performers focusing on authentic Balkan stories and folklore. They are planning a research trip to Eastern Europe in the autumn.

Shady Jane

Shady Jane is an all female collective of 5 performers whose focus is on combining new and existing text. They are undertaking their MA Devised Performance at the University of Winchester and have begun working on a new piece of devised theatre with 'Lethal Women' as a theme. They have received funding from Creative Advantage at the University of Winchester to complete this project which will focus on performing in heritage sites such as the National Trust property Mottisfont Abbey. The work will contain original music to be performed live alongside the 5-strong female group. In addition they are working on a new devised work entitles Sailing On playing with ideas of how disparate pieces of text can be weaved together to create one narrative.

About The Point, Eastleigh

Owned and managed by Eastleigh Borough Council, The Point was established in 1996 with one of the first lottery grants and has always had a strong emphasis on innovation, cultural pluralism and creative challenge. In 2009 they opened the first UK fully residential Creation Space - a state of the art light filled rehearsal studio with accommodation attached allowing artists 24 hours access to the rehearsal room.  Four Bedrooms can house up to 10 artists with the ground floor bedroom being fully accessible.  Artists who have created work there include Akram Khan Lone Twin and The Balletboyz. As part of their Associate Artists Scheme The Point supports eight emerging companies, giving them business and artistic mentorship, office, rehearsal and performance space, and it runs a professional development programme for artists in the region. Since January 2010 The Point has been led by Director, Sarah Brigham.  The Artists' Quarters Scheme is managed by Creative Producer Sacha Lee.
