Yuen Fong Ling on shifting Identities in Hong Kong
1 July 2007 will be the tenth anniversary of the British Governments handover of Hong Kong back to mainland China. To mark the occasion (mole) group of artists and curators led by Yuen Fong Ling and Sally Lai went to Hong Kong to begin research for an exhibition looking at the relationship between these places and its people. Alongside contributing researchers including artists Gordon Cheung, Kwong Lee, Anthony Key, Mayling To and Pollyanna Clayton-Stamm from Urbis Manchester, the visit revealed a number of shifting perspectives and attitudes of an artistic community in a country undergoing significant social and economic changes. The launch of Hong Kong Disneyland in September 2005 was a highly anticipated event in the cultural diary of Hong Kong and surrounding Mainland Chinese citizens. This magical kingdom with an estimated value of $19 million over forty years is built on Lantau Island and contributes to this area becoming a symbolic testament of Hong Kongs ideologies past and present.
