Networking artists' networks
In early April 2008, fifteen artists from around the UK took part in a research visit to Lille, France, entitled The Artist as Social Entrepreneur.
Organised jointly by NAN, Fabrica in Brighton, and LH du Siège gallery, Valenciennes. The intention was for artists representing a range of artist-led projects gallery spaces, studios, websites and one-off events in the UK to have the opportunity to visit comparable projects happening across the channel, and to debate issues arising in a day-long symposium at LH du Siège. Four artist-led projects were visited in the three-day trip including La Vitrine, a small gallery in a former hardware shop, and La Malterie, an exhibition space, artists studios, residency programme, bar, performance area and music practice space, all housed in a former brewery. La Vitrine started off life as a venue where artists work was displayed in the windows, but the entire space has gradually been given over to exhibitions. Director Solange Piatek has laid a new floor, added spotlights, and painted the walls cream, but left the built-in shelving in place, creating a venue which is aware of its former use.
