The membership of this UK-wide artist-led organisation is united by a drive to change the public perception of art in rural areas. It emphasises that "rural does not mean rustic by default" and that "cutting-edge art is not the sole preserve of urban areas". Cumbria-based artist Steve Messam established Fold in 2001 as a non-commercial exhibition venue in his studio building. It currently gives rural artists the opportunity to show work in an experimental environment though a programme of commissions, events and exhibitions, whilst providing rural audiences with the opportunity to experience innovative contemporary art. The organisation is largely run by volunteers and all paid positions are part time and offered to artists to enable them to continue their practice. Fold aims to remain as independent as possible and has a policy of spreading its funding across a number of agencies: funding is provided by Arts Council England, Rural Regeneration Cumbria, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and a local arts development agency.
