One advantage of publishing a UK-wide monthly magazine for professional artists and their collaborators since 1980 is the steady accumulation of data on the scope and nature of visual arts practices. Here, weve looked particularly at the changing face of opportunities for artists offered through a-n Magazine since 1998, highlighting the impact of political and economic strategies on how artists seek to develop their practice and distribute their work. 1989 trends and focuses Key themes for discussion during 1989 were exhibiting, current practice in film and video and live art and public art. We reported on the role and function of the arts funding bodies and their relationship with artists, and examined from the artists perspective the engagement-based nature of visual arts practices in the fields of live art and community and healthcare residencies. We also commented on the impact of the governments Enterprise Allowance scheme.
