Ben Coode-Adams talks to Rob Kesseler and NESTA about their symbiotic relationship.
The partnership between the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) and artist Rob Kesseler seeks to reawaken the fertile confluence between the botanical sciences and the decorative and fine arts. Awarded the fellowship to provide him with time, materials and equipment, Kesseler says Its a wonderful opportunity to encourage visual awareness of a fascinating, yet still untapped area of scientific research. As NESTA Fellow at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew the partnership provides him with a grant of £75,000 over three years. Kesseler is embedded in two institutions; NESTA and the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew. Although each has very different attitudes and goals, they are united behind the impetus to raise public awareness of science. This may sound trite, even naive, but in this case it is not just lip service, but a genuine motivation. The frequency and quality of the ways in which Kesseler's work has reached the public testifies to its integrity.
