CAN.05 has landed on Norwich filling every public space with contemporary art. Large-scale projects are taking place all over the city and into the surrounding county, including international artists’ commissions at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, interventions in the Castle Museum’s collection, Elizabeth Wright’s Norwich Lido and Richard Wentworth’s responses to the interior of Felbrigg Hall. The highlight is the long established ‘EAST International’ open competition, this year selected by Gustav Metzger. His aim was to create “an art exhibition without any art”, where many of the artists use communication technology, online screening and live performance as their medium, to engage with essentially political themes. While obviously benefiting from the increased publicity generated by CAN.05 and its seemingly huge marketing budget, ‘EAST’ sounds a note of caution regarding the new kid on the block, in its catalogue introduction: “We tried to learn from the experience of artists of the Liverpool Biennale at the ‘EASTdiscourse’ in November 2004, because of plans to develop CAN in Norwich,” [several of whom]...
