Miranda Whall and Graham Dolphin discuss programming and participating in a research trip to Berlin.
In July a group of artists from North East England and Scotland spent a weekend networking on neutral territory1 in Berlin as part of a-ns Artists Research Trip programme. Six months in Berlin I have just completed a six-month Arts Council England, North East residency in Berlin. I was given a wonderful studio in the Atelierhaus Mengerzeile in southwest Berlin and a grant of £7,000. I was expected to live and work in the studio but chose to rent my own apartment in beautiful Prenzlauerberg, which is an area in the old east of Berlin. The residency was designed so that I had two Berlin-based curators Helen Adkins and Heike Dander who worked hard with me to establish connections with eight galleries and curators operating in Berlin. With their help we located specific galleries and curators I wanted to be introduced to. This model would have been wrapped in gold if a gallery or curator had said yes we would love to show your work. I had some very positive feedback but the gallery programmes were all full and of course there is a one-in-a-million chance of anything resulting from this kind of introduction.
