Thanks to a special grant from Arts Council England, we were able to commission independent research from University of Newcastle on arts employers attitudes to paying artists during 2004. This, along with professional advice from chartered accountant Richard Murphy created the Fees and payments portfolio of expert guidance freely available on www.a-n.co.uk that provides practical application of a-ns Code of Practice for the Visual Arts published in 2003, the research for which was also supported by ACE. Amongst the factors that underpinned employers decisions on specific pay or fee levels revealed by University of Newcastles research study1 were: How experienced the artist is, including reputation as an artist and any special artistic skill that may be required The length of the period of contract Non-artistic skills such as teaching, working with hard-to-reach groups, or project management The personal qualities of the artist This evidence informed our decision to augment the universitys findings by commissioning a framework that demonstrates why self-employed artists who make up half of all professional...
