Because weve been commenting and reporting on artists practice and the wider environment for it since 1980, it seemed important in our 25th anniversary year to devote one of the a-n Collections to the back archive that is the material that predates our a-n Magazine resource on www.a-n.co.uk. A visit to Chicago in March 2005 put us in contact with Tom Burtonwood. In conversation, we discovered how closely hed followed a-ns work since graduation and thus how much hes in tune with our philosophy and intentions. Our invitation to him to select some key texts from our publishingin the 90s from a-n Magazine and Artists stories followed. We were delighted when he accepted. His introduction provides a valuable commentary on the context for artists and their work the public interfaces, strands of engagement and reasons for practice as well as on changing definitions of artist-led and practice-driven approaches.
