Artists motivations when working in the public realm.
Although much of the art in public places commissioned contemporaneously continues to be concerned with specific functionality such as civic regeneration, not all artists see advantages in having their creative processes and the fruits of them so closely defined or patronised. And whilst the former method of addressing the relationship between art and life may have some genuine advantages (income generation being one, visibility and career development others), whether it offers the synergenous context on which creativity and long-term social change depend remains open to debate. These pieces look at some current approaches and working processes amongst artists, which suggest other motivations for visual arts practice and roles for artists within them. These provide indicators of models for future exchange and interaction between artists and people. Because they are not concerned with traditional notions of audience-building, the outcomes suitably defy categorisation within current terms.
