Mike Stubbs examines some issues facing artists.
Within my new function as Senior Research Resident at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art I am beginning to actually concentrate on making art not commissioning it from others, or promoting for others, as I used to do. As I create some distance from my old power base and authority, it becomes easier to de-construct ex-spin. Likewise my prior knowledge of arts funding and organisation gives me an insiders understanding of the issues organisers face and probably makes me a complete pain to work with as an artist (apologies to all concerned). At the recent Werkleitz Biennial I witnessed artist Tehching Hsieh make a remarkable presentation, reporting on his sequential six-year-long performances: of clocking on every hour for a year, living outdoors for a year, living for a year tied to fellow artist Linda Montano by an eight foot length of rope, and so on, a humbling and humble exposition of daily life and art practice.
