Chales Saatchi saw one of Jenny Savilles paintings and commissioned a series, but she believes itss hard work and dedication that sustain her.
My mother was a primary school teacher and so I had a lot of access to materials, powder paint and things like that. As a child I was always making things out of junk, anything I could find, but I suppose it was not until I was fourteen or fifteen that I began to think that making art was what I could do for a living. My family encouraged my creativity, but perhaps not as far as thinking that I should do it for a living. Academic study was very important to them and I think they would have preferred it if I had gone to university to do an academic degree. In some ways I didnt really take into consideration what they wanted me to do, I suppose I went against them a bit. Art was what I wanted and more importantly it was what I could do and so I just went ahead and did it. I applied to do a foundation course, but I also applied directly to some Scottish art colleges where the foundation year is part of the four-year degree course. I was accepted to Glasgow School of Art and, for financial reasons amongst others the foundation is part of the degree so you get a grant for it I decided to go there.
