Grayson Perry on exhibiting in The Raw and the Cooked.
One of my main inspirations when I started using clay was how much I loathed all contemporary ceramics. When I started exhibiting my work I avoided any associations with the craft world and always showed in fine art galleries. But making pots it was inevitable that eventually I would drift into that funny little backwater of creativity that is studio ceramics. A friend told me to send some slides to John Leslie and I was flattered to be included in the Raw and the Cooked. Id been making pots for ten years and had never exhibited with other ceramicists before so I was quite excited at being included in a show that promised to showcase new work in clay. I dont know much about studio ceramics but I recognised several of the exhibitors as potters who had cropped up in every arty ceramics show Id seen in the last decade. In the case of Jacqueline Poncelet, not only was her name familiar but the work as well, dating from the mid 1980s. I thought this stretched the brief of the show somewhat.
