Laura Hewitt on Hotel Mariakapel, an artists initiative where the ideas of intimacy, dialogue and collaboration are fundamental concerns.
Hotel Mariakapel is an artists initiative based in Hoorn, a town just north of Amsterdam. Glasgow, however, was the city where the concept for the initiative, which hosts international artists projects and exhibitions, was conceived. Both artist-organisers Bart Lodewijks and Danielle van Zuijlen lived in Glasgow between 2001 and 2002 whilst Van Zuijlen completed an MFA. The early beginnings of Hotel Mariakapel can be tracked back to this experience of living in an unknown city, where new perspectives on the place were provided by their visitors. The idea for a place where international artists could both live and produce new work was behind the concept for the hotel. In time, the planning lead to securing the building they had heard was vacant back in Hoorn, and eventually Hotel Mariakapel materialised. Now up and running, the emerging vision at the hotel for artists is based on its firm commitment to placing the artist/artist group at the centre of each project.
