Deborah Jackson talks to Giles Bailey about a recent addition to the Glasgow scene.
Scotland has a long and extensively documented tradition of artist-run initiatives. In recent years there has been a particularly energetic flourishing of such activity, ranging from professionalised artist-run spaces (such as Edinburghs Embassy Gallery) to cultural producers without fixed location (such as Switch Space in Glasgow). One of the most recent additions to this grassroots activity is the artists collective Circus Circus. Comprised of eleven students due to graduate from the Sculpture and Environmental Art Department of Glasgow School of Art (GSA) later this year, it set up a temporary gallery in an A-listed mews at Park Circus in Glasgow. The group took the decision to run a temporary gallery, when the flat became available during a lag in renovating the property owned by Ariki Porteous, member of the group and also landlady of Nice n Sleazys, a fertile testing ground for many Glasgow bands. Inaugurated in March, with a group show by the collective members, the opening also operated as a one-off social and musical event.
