Sara Ogilvie, The Intellectuals, from a series of ten silkscreen prints called Tobacciana.
Whether regarded as a relaxing pastime or lethal habit, the act of smoking holds a historical gamut of associations and symbolisms. Glamour, seduction, intellectualism, status, defiance and the stranger are some of the many projections on stage and screen, in literature and advertising. These features and scenarios have formed the basis for this screen print series from the posturing of pipe smokers to playing with the traditional opulence of the cigar label. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Sara is currently working on two large screenprints commissioned by Inspire South East Northumberland Public Art and Design Initiative, and is a resident artist on the AA2A Artist in Residence Scheme at University of Newcastle. Her work is included in the group show Stone Plate Grease Water at MOMA Wales, 12 Mar -12 May. Tobacciana is showing at Northern Print until 4 March. Read a review of the...
