Ayling & Conroy survey the motives and trends that effect how UK commercial galleries select artists to exhibit.
Earlier this year, we were approached to develop a performance for the NAN Roadshow West Midlands: Ecosystem event in Stoke-on-Trent. Our performance sought to complement discussions on the commercial art market. Before the event, we asked a range of questions to a number of commercial galleries, several of which exhibited at the Zoo Art Fair over the last three years. We approached these galleries because they often represent early to mid career artists, and seem to be a possible progression for artists attending the event. Our performance sought to expand on the contradictions we found during this research; for every yes, definitely, do this there was a nooo way, please dont! We hoped to give an insight into a decision-making process which is largely hidden. The following information is a transcript of the answers used in our Family Fortunes style performance, and are from a selection of responses that we received via email and over the phone.
