Initiated by Glenn Holman and Andy Parsons in 2003, the aim of Floating world is to identify ways in which artists can disseminate their ideas widely using the medium of artists books.
Artists invited to contribute a book were chosen to reflect a wide variety of contemporary practice, ranging from Sarah Carne whose work is performative and video-based, to Edwin Aitken, who works primarily in painting. For all artists involved, creating a book became an absorbing and challenging research project involving the sharing of expertise around the more traditional bookbinding and printmaking processes and the difficulties in producing work digitally. Each book made is a discrete and autonomous piece of work, which although linked to each artists ongoing area of investigation, is nonetheless an artwork in its own right. Commissions have been awarded to Edwin Aitken, Simon Burton, Sarah Carne and Glenn Holman from London, Hidehiko Ishibashi from Tokyo, and Andy Parsons, Lizzie Kinsella and Diane Henshaw from Ireland. The Floating World Artists Books touring exhibition compliments and extends previous exhibitions in which Floating world has participated: LAB 04 and LAB 05 at the ICA, London and Gallery MAKI Tokyo in 2004 and 2005, and Terra Incognita, Amsterdam 2006.
