Patricia Fleming discusses the relationship with the art market for artists and curators in Wales and Scotland.
While I was delighted to be invited as a contributor to the NAN talk series looking at art markets in Scotland and Wales, I didnt feel a talk about art markets understood by many as buying/selling within the commercial sector was useful for the audience, nor do I have the experience to talk about the complexity of the businesses that have contributed to the growth of the sector in Scotland. I thought it was important however, to remind us of the many layers required to bring value to the marketplace a space to exchange art and ideas with others. Artists promote themselves naturally and work hard to create opportunities for themselves and their associates during the course of their everyday practice. Douglas Gordon winning the Turner Prize in 1996 followed by Roderick Buchanan winning the first Becks Futures Award in 2000 helped to keep the focus on artists from Scotland during a critical time in the growth of the commercial sector. Its not just the big marketing opportunities and the success of public or private sector galleries that holds the attention of the international art world, its also the consistency of the little steps taken...
