What gives a particular place its characteristics? Why are some cities hip and others lame? How does a neighbourhood change from good to bad? How can turning the corner from one street to another make you feel scared or safe? And why do we idolise the countryside? We have so many old, old ideas about place: that culture is an urban thing and in opposition to, or even an evolution from, the rural. We move to the city to work and retire to the country. The language of place has become shorthand for social types; street-smart, city-boy, townie, suburbanite or country bumpkin. Our thinking about our environments changes more slowly than the environments themselves. The relentless processes of building, gentrification, redevelopment, immigration and exodus mean that if even you stay in one place your whole life, the place you die might not be the same place you were born. So, where is it at?
