Artists projects in progress
For the past five years, Arts Council England and the British Antarctic survey have jointly funded and made possible the opportunity for two artists/writers to live and work alongside the scientists and support staff at the British Antarctic bases during the Antarctic summer months (winter in the UK). I saw the fellowship advertised in the a-n Magazine, decided I had to go for it and was lucky enough to be chosen as one of this years artists. In November, I flew out of Heathrow airport heading for the Falkland Islands via South America. From there, I boarded the ice breaking scientific ship, the James Clark Ross, hopefully (sea ice permitting) to arrive at the British Antarctic base, Rothera, where Ill live until I return home in mid February. My work usually involves lots of hot glass, film and photography. Ill be building a small glass furnace at the base and melting some of the waste glass to make small-scale on-site glass installations. Through film, sound recording and photography, Ill be exploring the movement of ice and light in the Antarctic and looking at its relationship to glass making and object ownership.
