David Miles discusses his work Forest as featured on the cover of this months a-n Magazine.
Most of my work over the past few years has been with cut-card pieces and mobiles, all having a strong narrative element. Some have personal stories, some are from local news items that have struck a chord in me, and others are more generic. Whats going on within the mobiles can be pieced together from the separate elements, and different readings are encouraged from the shadows cast and the slow movement echoing the gradual unfolding of a narrative. Most of the subject matter of this, and previous work is to do with fear, be it personal or collective. Forest began with a grouping of four mobiles, but has since grown to ten. It was intended to have a looser, more playful content than other work, allowing me to put whatever I wanted into it, anything that you could, or wouldnt want to, encounter in the woods. When its shown, you can walk into it, around it, theres no start or finish. Not everything is to scale within. There are close-ups. The trees should be taller, but they work more as ideas or symbols of trees rather than accurate depictions.
