Recent months have seen changes to the artistic landscape in Nottingham, reflective of a wider shift occurring in the surrounding cultural environment. These changes demonstrate that Nottingham is an increasingly attractive base for artistic activity, with a rising retention of graduates leaving higher education as well as enticing artists from the region and further afield.
Previously housed within The Factory on Dakeyne Street, Stand Assembly and Moot have moved to a new building just around the corner on Thoresby remaining within the Sneinton area of Nottingham. This Victorian four-storey former 'Boots' building represents a change in location and thinking, with the building an umbrella not only for these organisations but also for a cluster of other independent artists, curators and arts organisations. Different floors of the building will become operational over a staggered renovation period, allowing each floor to be made fit for purpose as the required resources are acquired. The ground floor, housing Jennie Syson/Hinterland Projects' Reading Room and Tomas Chaffe's exhibition in the substantially larger Moot gallery opened in October 2008. The second and third floors will provide fifteen studios for artists from Stand Assembly, Via Vaudeville and individual practitioners. The intention is to provide better quality artists' workspace as well as grouping together a bigger and more diverse range of art practices.
