The McMaster Review published earlier this year reiterated the direct benefits of having practitioners at the centre of arts decision-making processes.
Amongst recommendations was that arts boards should contain two artists. Between August and September, many of Arts Council England's regional councils put out open calls for new board members. Here, we look at how this has affected the practitioner make-up of these. The London regional council of twelve members includes Emmanuel Cooper who has run his own ceramics business in London for over thirty years. He has been Editor of Ceramics Review since 1998 and is a council member of the Craft Potters Association. He was a member of the Arts Council from 2001 to 2002 and has served as an advisor for arts organisations including the Crafts Council. He is a writer, lecturer and critic and a Visiting Professor at the Royal College of Art. Currently Curator at Autograph ABP, Indra Khanna was a practising artist, community artist and art teacher for fifteen years before moving into curating. The recent call for new council members has resulted in the appointment of Cllr Guy Nicholson, a contributor in 2005/06 to ACE's advisory group for the Review of the Presentation of contemporary visual art that resulted in the Turning point strategy.
