The British Ceramics Biennial (BCB), launched on 1 December 2008 and directed by A FINE LINE partners Barney Hare Duke and Jeremy Theophilus, is a major initiative to create a programme of events and activities and a showcase Biennial event in Stoke-on-Trent to take place in October/November of 2009, 2011 and 2013.
BCB aims to embrace the heritage of the Potteries as the home of British ceramics, stimulate creativity and innovation across the breadth of ceramic practice and sharpen Stoke-on-Trent's creative edge as an international centre for excellence in contemporary ceramics. The initiative comprises a programme of residencies, fellowships, commissions, learning and inclusion and business start-up 2009-2013; and an eight week high-profile series of exhibitions, events and public presentations. The centre-piece of the inaugural BCB in 2009 will be an exhibition of the ceramic work of finalists for Biennial awards in Design, Art, Craft, Industry and Public Realm categories, made by an expert panel. Amongst a number of residencies will be three-month fellowships at University of Staffordshire for international artists to work with the city, its heritage and industries. The associated participation and workshop programme linked to each will invite the public to work alongside artists and designers, acquiring skills and knowledge and contributing residency outcomes.
