The late 1970s witnessed what might be described as an explosion of experimental theatre (as it was then known). Judith Knight and Seonaid Stewart, however, were quick to recognise that despite a great deal of new work being staged, it had a very limited lifespan. They could see that there was little support or management for such practice, even though funding was often forthcoming, and decided to form a small company in an attempt to provide appropriate administrative assistance for artists and organisations in this burgeoning field. In 1979, from a modest office space in Clerkenwell, London, Knight and Stewart began to operate as Artsadmin. Their immediate plan was to produce artists work, resource-share and, ultimately, sustain this pioneering performative practice for as long as was necessary. The urgent need for such an organisation was instantly confirmed as their services were immediately in high demand, though it was some years before they were able to persuade the then Arts Council of Great Britain that Artsadmins role was important, both artistically and financially, for the development of this work.
