Art and design graduates sallying forth into the outside world annually number 3,750. BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Newcastle upon Tyne is the best funded gallery in Arts Council England’s RFO portfolio. Craft is a growing industry worth over £800 million. DACS has collected over £4.4 million in resale royalties for over 1000 artists since February 2006. Eastern England gets the lowest visual arts RFO funding. Fifty per cent of visual arts organisations surveyed in 2005 said they didn’t pay artists. Government is spending £25m on a pilot scheme in ten areas for schools to provide pupils with five hours of cultural activity weekly. Households in the UK spend on average 14 per cent of their income on culture and recreation. In London 12 per cent of workers – 554,000 people – were creatively employed in 2005, adding over £20 billion to London’s cultural output. Many young people are spending 20+ hours’ a week on social networking sites such as bebo, Myspace, Facebook and YouTube.
