According to London A Cultural Audit, the first quantitative comparison of Londons cultural environment with major world cities New York, Paris, Tokyo and Shanghai, London is leading the way internationally.
With more museums and galleries, more theatres and concert halls, and more music venues and cinemas, London is ahead on many indicators, from high art to popular culture. Culture is economically important, attracting tourists, but is also inextricably linked to business. By 2005, 12 per cent of all London workers 554,000 people were creatively employed in a sector adding over £20 billion to Londons output. In order to maintain this success and Londons creative edge the Mayor of London announced in March a £1.4 million fund for organisations to develop new cultural projects. Established by the London Development Agency and delivered in partnership with Arts Council England, the fund is for an initial period of eighteen months. If successful, it is envisaged that more funding will be made available, to help sustain Londons pre-eminence for cultural and creative activity amongst great world cities in the run up to 2012.
