Cynthia Cousens explores the practice of weave-designer Eleanor Pritchard, discussing exhibitions, commissions and Crafts Council support.
Eleanor Pritchard is well known for her softly coloured woven wool blankets and cushions; however alongside these production pieces runs a rich and diverse practice, including bespoke fabrics for fashion and interiors, experimental exhibition and architectural work. Seeing herself primarily as a weave designer, she is happy to take on board the requirements of others in conjunction with her own distinctive vision. Pritchard came to prominence on graduation from Chelsea College of Art in 2001, winning the Lee 400 prize and a commission from Christian Lacroix for his haute couture collection. A wide range of prestigious projects followed, notably Atrium Screens for The National Trust Headquarters (2005), vestments for Ely Cathedral (2008), a solo exhibition Work in Process for Clerkenwell Green Association (2007) and participation in a group exhibition Urban Field at Devon Guild (2007). Throughout this Pritchard runs freelance design work and production of lengths for leading interiors companies such as Osborne and Little and Margaret Howell.
