Berlin plays host to two events that utilise openness as a means of operation; naturally resulting in two distinctly different outcomes.
The 5th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art entitled When things cast no shadow, began back in April and continues until 15 June. Whilst during the latter period of the Biennial (115 June) a newcomer in the field of Berlin contemporary art joins this now regular feature, in the form of 'New Life Berlin' curated by participatory art community wooloo.org Curated by Adam Szymczyk and Elena Filipovic, the 5th edition of the Berlin Biennial (BB5), brings together artists in an exhibition that traverses five sites. The first four are enclosed within distinct geographical locations: KW Institute for Contemporary Art; Neue Nationalgalerie; the Schinkel Pavillon and Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum, whilst the fifth site, a temporal one, occupies the nights of the day/night split within the Biennial structure. The curators talk of avoiding the use of a singular theme, offering instead an exhibition that experiments with form and temporality, described in knowingly enigmatic terms as an open structure in five movements without a plot.
