The first week in June will see around 60,000 artists, collectors, gallerists, curators, and art enthusiasts from across the globe flock to the Swiss town of Basel for the 39th edition of Art Basel.
Described as the Olympic Games of the art world, the international art fair hosts over 300 established and emerging galleries from across the world and showcases more than 2,000 contemporary artists working in all media. The twenty-nine UK galleries selected to participate by the fairs rigorous jury include The Approach, Stephen Friedman Gallery, Frith Street Gallery and Hauser & Wirth. Running from 4-8 June, the week-long fair provides an overview of the international art market and a glimpse of the glitz and glamour of the international art scene. Highlights include Art Unlimited, a pioneering exhibition platform for projects that transcend the classical art-show stand including video projections, large-scale installations, massive sculptures and live performances featuring Rodney Graham and Thomas Hirschhorn; Art Statements, more than thirty one-person stands by young artists working with rising galleries worldwide and Public Art Projects, projects by international artists, day and night for the duration of the fair.
