Sarah Craske & Stacy Keeler, The Womens Land Army, found materials, plant and performance. Commissioned by Margate Rocks 08.
Citing the Womens Land Army during the Dig for Victory campaign, Gerard Winstanleys book The Law of Freedom in a Platform (1652), written in protest to the Enclosures Act, and Margates current cultural redevelopment strategy, this work discusses the importance of open space and sustainable living. Throughout January to April, Craske and Keeler turned their studios into greenhouses in which hundreds of edible flowers and vegetables were grown. Taking on the guise of the Womens Land Army, during Margate Rocks 08, they transplanted the seedlings in land set aside for development in locations that were previously open spaces and allotments (all discovered by working with local archives, people and the council during the three months of research activity). Coinciding with this performance, the Womens Land Army installed their head quarters the Shed Museum. The installation was designed and built from found objects from around the area and displays key items uncovered during the initial research activity.
