Kent, and the Kent Coast in particular, has become host to a series of contemporary art festivals and international events.
Following the trend of culture-led regeneration, the events seek to put these towns on the international art map whilst increasing cultural tourism to the areas, and attracting artists and creative industries. From Ashfords Lost O public art programme around the loss of its ring road, to Margate Rocks Festival of Art and Ecology earlier this year, the projects are bringing emerging and established international artists, curators, filmmakers, writers and critics to the area. The inaugural Folkestone Triennial, Tales of Time and Space, 14 June 14 September, curated by Andrea Schleiker, features a stellar line-up of artists including Tracey Emin, Mark Wallinger, Nathan Coley, Tacita Dean, Richard Wentworth and Richard Wilson from Britain, and international figures such as Mark Dion and Christian Boltanski. The triennial is modeling itself on the MÜnster Sculpture Project in Germany, where both temporary and public works engage specifically with local history, geography and communities.
