Artists Sarah Craske and Stacy Keeler and curator Jessica Baum talk about the challenges of working together in the latest in our collaborative relationships series.
Our relationship with Margate Rock’s Curator Jessica Baum started with a series of questions in October 2007. Showing a keen interest in our research activity and method of working, we then regularly engaged in debates about our work and art’s relationship with ecology. Our relationship developed organically as we challenged ideas and methods of working. This culminated in her desire to commission us for the contemporary arts festival. As emerging artists, we have had limited experience with curators, however this experience has made us acutely aware of curatorial impact on work and the benefits of working with a facilitating curator. There were many reasons for the successful relationship that grew. Jessica values the research and development of artist’s practice and gave us space to continue this for the commission. In fact, as the curator, she undertook frenetic research alongside our own work, constantly feeding us with information and possible direction whilst challenging our own ideas and research activity.
